MH : Around the middle, the show sort of takes a turn and becomes a bit more about the interpersonal connections. The timely Netflix series stars Miles Heizer as a young gay man discovering himself and a brotherhood while serving in the military.

I was really excited by the sort of lightness that the show has. Despite being a gay coming-of-age-show, Boots never shows its protagonist doubting his own queerness.

Heizer says that the show is not only about found family, but about the importance of friendship for all people. They love each other for who they are. Telling a gay story in this setting is pretty uncommon. That sense of chosen family is at the core of Boots.

As the series continues, we begin to see that every character at boot camp is struggling with some sort of secret and that they will have to rely on each other in order to survive. LO : That was one of my favorite experiences watching the heizer for the first time, which was only about a month ago.

They see each other for who they are. It doesn't shy away from the fact that often in the most serious of times is when things are the funniest. Based on the memoir The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White, the Netflix comedy does depict Cameron (Miles Heizer) as closeted, but miles unsure about who he is.

I think he starts growing, especially through Sullivan. I think it happened progressively enough that we all felt those shifts [as they] were happening and just changed our performances accordingly. His decision to keep his sexuality a. And he starts discovering things about himself.

Then you go back and you watch a scene that we were in — that I was personally maybe a little grumpy on the day — and it is the funniest thing in that entire episode. Despite being a gay coming-of-age-show, Boots never shows its protagonist doubting his own queerness. There were moments of incredible intimacy as well as moments of titillation and moments of danger. But, [for me it was] just the script really, as the audition process went on, just gay drip fed more and more of the character and how dark it goes for him.

It just excited me. What were your thoughts on your show being able to move like that? He sees this version of himself that he would like to be. They have conflict with each other because of who they are.

I was really impressed with the way the show is able to ping pong from one tone to another. I was so grateful to get to be a part of it. Obviously, as the story goes along, he starts to see Sullivan crumble and starts to realize that he actually represents this version of himself that would be shutting down his truth.

Those moments happen slowly over the process of the show.
